How old do I have to be to get tattooed in Maine?
In the State of Maine you must be 18 years old on the date you get tattooed and must be able to prove that with a government issued photo I.D. No exceptions!
Does it hurt?
In a word, yes. But, not nearly as bad as you might be thinking. Tattoos are incredibly popular and the discomfort of being tattooed is so short lived! Once you have your finished piece you will not remember how it felt, you will just be happy to have it. Trust me.
Perhaps you're new to tattoos and are looking for the right studio to have your tattoo done? You probably also have some questions about how the process works. These are some answers to some questions I am asked often. If there's something you don't see answered here, please feel free to get in touch.
How much will it cost?
My pricing starts at $100.00, that is the shop minimum, for a very small simple tattoo. Pricing goes from there. The tattoos at Gemstone are priced out by the piece and that can be discussed when you make your appointment. There are lots of factors like detail and size that affect the cost. For larger work that requires a full day session we would discuss a 'day' or 'session' rate.
Is pricing negotiable?
The simple answer is no. Haggling with a tattooer over lower prices is just bad form. You are paying your tattooer to create beautiful, permanent artwork on your body that you will have for the rest of your life. It's not like haggling over a vintage lamp at the flea market on Sunday. That said, if you are on a budget and really want to get tattooed, talk to your tattooer! If you present a figure that you have to work with, I will do my best to work with you.
Do I need an appointment?
I prefer to work by appointment as it gives me time to draw for your session. It allows planning and forethought and I think makes for a better tattoo. That said, I do occasionally take walk-ins. There are certain tattoos that can be done well on shorter notice. I don't always have time to do walk-ins but it doesn't hurt to check. If it is a tattoo I feel needs more drawing and preparation, I will let you know.
What's the best way to make an appointment?
The best would be to call (207) 331-7330 or send an email from the contact page here on the website. If I haven't tattooed you before or if this is a new project inquiry I will most likely set you up with a consultation first. It's nice to meet and discuss your ideas in person and makes for a better tattoo. If you live far away we can consult over phone or email.
What should I do the day of my tattoo appointment?
First, make sure you get a good night's sleep the night before you come in. Second, eat! It's a terrible idea to get tattooed while tired and running on an empty stomach. Getting tattooed requires a surprising amount of energy and you burn quite a bit of fuel. If you've got nothing to go on you're not going to get very far! It's also a good idea to bring water and snacks with you. Think about where your tattoo is going on your body and dress accordingly. Wearing that new jumpsuit on the day you start a leg tattoo maybe isn't the best idea.
Can you coverup my old tattoo?
Probably? But, seriously, yes, I most likely can. Coverups definitely require a consultation. It's incredibly important to see what I need to cover and discuss what is possible with you. I can't cover your giant black ink '90's armband with white and light yellow flowers. There are limitations posed by covering an existing tattoo. However, you'd be surprised at what I can make disappear.
Can you cover scars or birthmarks?
As with covering existing tattoos, I need to meet with you in person to take a look at the area to be covered. If the scar is still fresh, pink, or raised I will not be able to tattoo you.
How is equipment sterilized at Gemstone Tattoo?
I use new needles and disposable supplies for each tattoo. The equipment I use has been sterilized according to hospital grade sterilization standards. Any supplies that come into contact with you for your tattoo are used for you and you alone and are thrown away afterwards. I tattoo using a completely disposeable setup, and any needles are disposed of in a biohazard container after your tattoo session is finished.
How do I heal my new tattoo?
I will provide you with a detailed copy of healing instructions that you will take with you when you leave the shop after your session.
You will keep the tattoo wrapped for a minimum of three hours after your tattoo appointment. You then wash with antibacterial soap, allow the tattoo to dry, and then apply a very thin layer of unscented lotion.
The lotion is used twice a day for the next two weeks. During that two weeks it is your job to not pick at the tattoo. You will also not get sunburned, go swimming, or take long soaking baths.
Do I need to make a deposit?
Yes. Every appointment requires a non-refundable $50.00 deposit. For larger, multiple session projects that non-refundable deposit is $100.00. The deposit will be credited towards the final appointment of a multi-session tattoo. In the event that you are unable to give me 48 hours notice to cancel your appointment your deposit will be forefeited. I require deposits from my good friends, old clients, everyone. It's a contractual agreement and motivates you to show up! I put lots of time and effort into drawing for my clients and a deposit is your end of the deal.
